Laurent Garnier on UK Dance Music

Legendary French DJ Laurent Garnier accused The UK Dance Music scene of being narrow-minded and conservative this week and stated the over-commercialisation of Britain’s music industry has eroded audiences’ keenness for experimentation.

“England used to be the land of musical experimentation, a heartfelt land of discovery but I think England has completely mislaid that nowadays,” Laurent complained.

“Now Germany is a lot more accepting of experimental music projects than England, and so are France and Belgium.”

The hugely influential techno pioneer spent the the 80s emerged in UK Dance Music Culture at nights like the Hacienda during its rave climax. Returning to France became the first idol DJ in the country and on to become one of the most respected ambassadors of dance worldwide. Still as passionate about Dance Music as ever, he strut with disappointment more than malice when reflecting on The Current UK Dance Music field.

His comments came as part of an interview about his new album Tales Of a Kleptomaniac, a typically wildly diverse mixture of tracks from many musical bases, The Album Has been critically acclaimed in Germany and France has attracted mixed reactions from UK Dance Music Fans

Tales of a Kleptomaniac is out shortly on F Com.
